EDB Investigates: Family Endures Dangerous Car Repair Nightmare — A Warning for Consumers

By C. de Jong & Caleb de Jong | EDB Investigations

A local family has come forward with a harrowing account of negligence and alleged dishonesty by a car repair shop, underscoring the risks consumers can face when entrusting their vehicles to unreliable businesses.

The family’s ordeal began when they brought their 2012 vehicle to the shop for a seemingly simple repair. According to their account, the car was held for two weeks without resolution. The shop charged for a new battery—despite the vehicle’s original battery being only a few months old—but never installed it. The underlying mechanical issue remained unaddressed.

The consequences were severe. On the way home, the car broke down eight separate times, forcing the driver and their disabled son to walk home in freezing winter conditions. In a separate incident, when the shop towed a newer vehicle belonging to the family, it ripped off the front bumper, then drilled holes to tie it back with wire—a makeshift and unsafe “repair” that permanently damaged the car.

“My disabled son and I were left stranded in the cold multiple times because the car was unsafe to drive,” the parent said. “No family should have to endure this. This was dangerous, negligent, and completely unacceptable.”

The family reported further dishonesty, alleging that shop staff initially denied that the car had stalled during test drives and attempted to mislead them about the extent of the damage.

Why Accountability Matters

Incidents like this highlight why consumers must hold businesses accountable. Experts recommend several steps for those facing similar situations:

  1. Document Everything: Keep detailed records of communication, invoices, and photos of damage.

  2. Report to Consumer Protection Agencies: In Canada, complaints can be filed with the Better Business Bureau, provincial consumer protection offices, or the Competition Bureau if misleading practices are suspected.

  3. Share Your Experience Publicly: Google reviews and social media can alert other customers, but keep statements factual to avoid legal risk.

  4. Request Proper Repairs or Refunds: Demand that the business correct the issue, refund your money, or offer compensation for damages.

  5. Seek Legal Advice if Needed: Particularly when damage or injury occurs, consulting a lawyer can help protect your rights.

Consumer Awareness Is Key

This case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly routine car repairs can become dangerous when businesses fail to act responsibly. Families—especially those with vulnerable members—should verify the reputation of repair shops, ask for clear documentation of services performed, and ensure vehicles are safe before leaving the premises.

EDB encourages all consumers to be vigilant and informed, to protect themselves from negligence, and to insist that businesses are held accountable when they fail to meet basic safety and honesty standards.
